Education and Research Working Together to Transform Care
At Carilion Clinic, we are committed to improving the health of the communities we serve and promoting excellence in the quality of care we provide.
From the moment our first hospital opened more than 120 years ago, education and clinical research have been integral to our mission.
A Unique Partnership
In 2007, Carilion Clinic and Virginia Tech collaborated to create a unique public-private partnership aimed at transforming health care through research and educating the physician thought-leaders of tomorrow.
The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC allow both organizations to leverage their strengths-Virginia Tech's sciences, bioinformatics and engineering expertise and Carilion's clinical and educational expertise-to improve the health and lives of individuals in the Commonwealth and beyond.
The Fralin Biomedical Research Institute was founded in 2010 and has since doubled its physical space, training the next generation of world-class researchers and scientists. The VTC School of Medicine has seen extraordinary success as well with thousands of applicants vying each year for fewer than 50 positions in each class. Nearly every graduating class since the school's inception in 2010 has achieved a 100 percent match rate for acceptance into residency programs.
Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC
Biomedical and clinical research conducted at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC is aimed at understanding health and disease states and developing prevention measures, diagnostic tools and treatments that will benefit patients in the communities we serve and throughout the country. The Institute also allows researchers and students at Virginia Tech to collaborate with Carilion clinicians on biomedical and health science research, including inflammation, infectious disease, neuroscience, cardiovascular science and cardiology.
Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM) uses a patient-centered curriculum designed to develop physicians who can take research from the lab to the patient's bedside. Students learn, train and work side by side with Carilion's highly experienced medical staff. This innovative approach stresses the importance of research, quality, safety, evidence-based medicine, interdisciplinary and interprofessional teamwork, chronic disease management, wellness and prevention and public health.
Continued Growth
Our VTC partnership has grown exponentially over the last decade. The Fralin Biomedical Research Institute and VTCSOM have formed the core of the VTC Health Sciences and Technology Campus in the Roanoke Innovation Corridor. Major research will continue to focus on biomaterials and body-device interfaces, brain health and disease, cardiovascular science, infectious diseases and immunity and metabolism and obesity.

Graduate Medical Education
As an academic medical center, our partnership with VTC School of Medicine further enhances Carilion's long history of providing its own robust residency and fellowship programs. The Carilion Clinic - Virginia Tech Carilion Graduate Medical Education program offers 28 fully accredited fellowship and residency programs, each designed to prepare the next generation of physicians for successful careers in medicine and research.
Residents receive outstanding graduate medical education and have the opportunity to take part in clinically based research, both of which are vital to delivering excellent patient-centered care. Carilion's faculty and staff are dedicated to the goal of training highly competent and compassionate health care professionals capable of thriving in the most demanding clinical and academic environments.
Radford University Carilion
Radford University Carilion (RUC), formerly Jefferson College of Health Sciences, provides a rigorous real-world learning experience to nearly 1,200 students pursing undergraduate and graduate degrees in the health sciences. As a part of Radford University and in partnership with Carilion Clinic, RUC boasts a faculty of practicing clinicians who, in a clinical setting on Carilion Clinic's Roanoke Campus, teach students to care for patients, conduct research and explore how to manage organizations. Driven by what's next, RUC graduates are meeting health care workforce needs across the Commonwealth of Virginia and beyond.
Research and Development
Education and clinical research have always been a strong foundation for the excellent care our patients receive because new and advanced treatment options are investigated through clinical trials and other research initiatives.
With more than 100 clinical trials currently offered through Carilion, patients have the unique opportunity to participate in cutting edge treatment and therapy options close to home.
Carilion Clinic Research and Development collaborates with The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC in endeavors with a common goal of improving the health of our community. Our research community has expanded beyond our region through our association with the integrated Health Research Institute of Virginia (iThriv). The value and impact of our research for our patients is strengthened because of the relationships we have built.
